What is an image hash?

An image hash is a unique digital fingerprint generated from the visual characteristics of an image. Unlike cryptographic hashes (which change completely with a 1-pixel change), an image hash represents visual content, allowing visually similar images to produce identical or close hashes.

How do I generate an image hash online?

To generate an image hash online, select your analyzer tab, upload an image (JPG, PNG, or WebP) by dragging it into our dropzone, and copy the calculated pHash, dHash, or aHash values shown in the computed results dashboard.

pHash (Perceptual Hash) is an advanced image hashing algorithm. It resizes an image, converts it to grayscale, computes a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), and generates a 64-bit fingerprint from the lowest frequency coefficients. It is highly resistant to edits, resizing, and compression.

What is perceptual hashing?

Perceptual hashing is the process of generating a fingerprint from an image based on its visual features rather than its raw binary data. This ensures that visually similar images produce hashes with a very low Hamming distance, which is ideal for deduplication.

How do I detect duplicate images?

You can detect duplicate images by calculating their perceptual hashes (e.g., pHash) and measuring the Hamming distance between them. A distance of 0 indicates an exact visual match, while a distance under 10 suggests the images are visually similar or near-duplicates.

What is the difference between pHash and MD5?

MD5 is a cryptographic hash designed to verify raw binary integrity; any change to the image results in a completely different MD5. pHash is a perceptual hash designed to verify visual appearance; minor edits or compression changes will result in the same or highly similar pHash.

Can I compare two images using hashes?
